HOW WERE YOUR CHRISTMAS PHOTOS

Were Your Christmas Photos ‘Ho Ho Ho’ or ‘Oh No No’?

It's that most wonderful time of year again!

And when schools and nurseries across the land are recovering from the annual Autumn photo day. How did yours go? Did Rudolph get his nose right in the shot? Did the Grinch manage to steal all the smiles? Or did you manage to get through the festive photos relatively unscathed, and with some great images for parents and for the school too?

Now it’s over, take a deep breath, and let’s review.

School Photographer

Were They Frame-Worthy Photos?

First off, did you get some really amazing photos this year? Or do you have yet another set of slightly cringy photos, where you can hear the photographer begging ‘say cheese!’ through the image?

We’re firm believers that as Christmas is a time of joy, school and nursery photos should include some joyous kids having actual fun. Whether you decided on traditional school photos or festive fun, you want genuine smiles, giggles and belly laughs, and for that, you need a photographer who knows how to get them. If your photo session was dull and the pictures a little lacklustre, now is the time to find yourself a new photographer for the new year.

We know a good one if you need a recommendation…

Did You Make The Most Of Them?

If, like us, your school photographer delivered not only standard school portraits, but photos of your Christmas events and family photos too, did they achieve these 3 key aims?

  • Provide joy to parents
  • Raise money for the school
  • Give the school new marketing materials

So our question is, did your Christmas photos do all of this? Did you provide great images to make your parents smile, boost your budget with festive fundraising and snag yourself some amazing marketing materials in the process? Did you maximise the opportunities for Christmas gifts through your photos? Christmas is the ideal time to achieve these 3 goals, and if you didn’t quite hit the mark, it’s time to look at why, and how you can improve next year.

For example, you could take photos of the Christmas play at the dress rehearsal and sell prints to boost fundraising. Plus use them to promote next year’s performance. You could run a festive family photo day for all of the students, so that families and the local community can get some lovely festive family portraits, and you can raise some extra money for the school. You can even take festive photos for noticeboards, websites and lanyards! There are loads of ways you can use Christmas photos in your school, so if you need some ideas for next year, call our elves!

Looking Forward To Next Time?

If you’re looking back at your photo day and you’re glad to see the back of it, something is wrong! If you left the day tired, frazzled, and not sure you actually got what you needed from it, then you need a new photographer. And if you’re dreading the pile of admin that goes with photo ordering every time the photographer visits, then you definitely need to try someone new!

Of course, if you work in a school or nursery, you know there’s no rest for the wicked. As soon as one photo day is finished, it’s time to start planning the next one. But it doesn’t have to be traumatic! At Smiles at School, our job is to make things easier for you and the school administration team by taking away that strain with simple, easy, and professional school photography, and low admin options too.

Most schools now will be looking at 2023 and working out what they need to be doing and when. To make sure you don’t miss anything, here are a few of the photo opportunities you need to be thinking about for the year:

  • Prospectus & website images (January-May)
  • Class & team groups (May & June)
  • Leavers portraits & group photos (June & July)
  • My First Class photos (September)
  • Individual portraits – standard or festive! (September-November)
  • School plays & family day fundraisers (November & December)

At Smiles at School, we love helping our partner schools and nurseries achieve all of the above in a pressure-free way. We get more involved in the process than your average school or nursery photographer, supporting you with admin, reminders, and managing the whole photo ordering process for you. So all you have to do is sit back and relax knowing we’ve got it all covered.

But don’t leave it to the last minute! Our diary fills up faster than a Christmas stocking, and while we do our best to fit in late requests, we can’t always manage it. So take a look at your calendar and book your photo days now, so you don’t have to stress about them nearer the time!
